Ergonomics and design:
The lens has a mushroom-shaped design with a thin stem and a massive front part. The specimen is perfectly assembled, and its construct does not cause any concern - the "trunk" does not spontaneously leave and does not advance even with active shaking. There are no backlashes or any other signs of poor build quality, the lens looks and feels like a reliable companion capable of serving the photographer for many years. Adds confidence to the dust and splash protection, as evidenced by the rubber skirt around the mount. The rest of the protective elements are hidden from the photographer's eyes inside the structure.
There is only one switch on the body, which is responsible for activating manual focus. There is no stabilizer in this lens, that is, depending on physical fitness, we can talk about a range of shutter speeds for guaranteed sharp shots from about 1/30 in the wide-angle position and from 1/80 in the tele position.
Image quality and sample photos:
Optically, the Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED is pretty good. Autofocus is one of the best - quiet, very fast and tenacious even in conditions of almost complete absence of light. Full focusing cycle time (from infinity to 0.38m and back) - 0.9 sec! In manual focus mode, the focusing ring rotates only 90 degrees, it is difficult to focus on focus. Most likely, the small stroke of the focusing ring is used for fast automatic focusing.
The Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED has an aperture of 9 blades, which is above normal. When the diaphragm is closed, fairly flat discs are formed in the out-of-focus area. The lens is very good at shooting with blurred foreground and background. Thanks to a good optical design, constant f / 2.8 aperture and short MDF (only 38 cm), this lens allows you to take shots with very beautiful blur. Even a slightly closed aperture does not spoil the bokeh, and the optical design guarantees blur without unpleasant scales. When shooting a female portrait, the color and plasticity of the skin are well conveyed, but the detail does not suffer.
First of all, I would like to note the excellent sharpness in the center throughout the focal length range. The Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED is one of the few zoom lenses that comes close in sharpness to prime lenses at full aperture. The lens is resistant to backlight. The lens' only drawback is the 24mm distortion and slight vignetting at open apertures. The lens gives good contrast and color reproduction. The bokeh of the lens is very nice and soft.
If you need a high-quality and convenient lens for shooting weddings, various reports, 24-70mm is ideal for this role. It saves you the hassle of lugging around 2-3 lenses that need to be changed all the time. At a wedding, it is important not to miss the moment, with Nikkor 24-70 it is quite difficult to miss it. Excellent workmanship, excellent reliability, high maximum aperture, 9-blade rounded diaphragm, 3 aspherical and 3 low-dispersion elements, ultrasonic autofocus drive, minimum focusing distance of 38 cm - will not leave you indifferent.
