Discover the hidden features of a Canon camera

Installing Magic Lantern firmware on a Canon camera gives it many new features. You can shoot HDR video and use the focus peaking function. Additionally, you can use some more new features.

This article provides step-by-step instructions for installing Magic Lantern firmware.

There is a lot of potential hidden inside your Canon camera. The Magic Lantern program is the key that will open up new camera abilities unknown to you.

Attention! All actions you perform at your own peril and risk!
Magic Lantern is one of the most popular firmware available, opening up many possibilities for creating high-quality photos and videos. This is a free, freely distributed program compatible with the Canon firmware fund, which provides new options, the number of which is constantly updated.

After installing Magic Lantern, your SLR camera gets some new useful tools:
1.Focus peaking: emphasizes the flickering border details of the scene in focus;
2.Zebras: shows areas with under and over exposure;
3. Intervalometer - a useful tool for frame-by-frame shooting, does not require any remote connections;
4.Motion detector: the camera takes a picture if a moving object hits the lens.

These new options and tools are just the tip of the iceberg. A complete list of features, options, and tools can be found in the Magic Lantern User Guide.

I must say right away that the Magic Lantern program is not supported by Canon manufacturers. Installing this firmware may void the warranty on the camera.

Magic Lantern can be installed on the following types of cameras: 5D Mark II, 5D Mark III, 6D, 7D, 50D, 60D, 500D, 550D, 600D, 650D, 700D, 1100D and EOS M.

The installation process of Magic Lantern
Step 1 Find a free SD card and format it in the camera. Then go to the page of the Magic Lantern website and select the model of your camera from the list.

Step 2 Make sure that the official firmware for your camera is up to date. The Magic Lantern download page will tell you the latest firmware version number. Check which version is installed on your camera, select any of the manual modes (P / A / S / M) on the switch, and press the Menu button. Scroll through the list until you find the version number.

Before installing Magic Lantern, check that the official firmware version must be new.

If necessary, you can go to the official website of the manufacturer of Canon and download the latest firmware for your SLR camera.

Step 3 Insert the SD card into a personal computer and download the Magic Lantern program to it.

Step 4 Insert the SD card into the camera and turn it on. Install the firmware by going to the menu and selecting the firmware option. Press Set and confirm your choice to update the firmware. You will be prompted to restart the camera - turn off the power and turn it on again.

Step 5 Reset all user settings: press Menu and find the option “Reset Settings” - (Clear settings). Exit the Canon menu system by pressing the menu again, and then press the basket button and you will see the Magic Lantern options.

If you encounter any difficulties during the installation process, refer to the tips of the complete guide on the Magic Lantern website.

General tips for user Magic Lantern

1. Some options require a reboot of the camera and a new selection of options before starting; 2. In the Live View mode, press the info button several times to remove the Canon menu data, after which you can see the Magic Lantern icons;
3.When you are in the Magic Lantern menu, press the Menu button to open the screen with all your options in the columns (this is convenient, there is no need to scroll through the pages).

Useful photography tools
Intervalometer: select at what intervals the camera will take pictures. Go to the menu, scroll down to the Intervalometer, click "Install" - Set to activate. Then press the Q button and you will see a screen with these settings.

Audio trigger: now your camera can take pictures automatically if there is any sound next to it. To do this, go to the Menu, select Audio Remote Shot and click "Install" - Set. Then press the Q button and set the response level to the highest value - 20 decibels, otherwise the camera will take pictures with soft sounds.

Clap your hands or make some other sound to understand at what noise level the camera takes a picture.

Focus peaking and zebras: These options are very useful for photographers and video enthusiasts. Focus peaking gives you the ability to immediately see which details and objects are in focus, while zebras shows areas of overexposure. From the menu, select Overlay, enable zebras. You can customize many other options to your liking in the submenu.

Exit the menu, enable live view, and press the Info button several times to turn off the Canon display. You will see the exposure data at the bottom of the screen (focus peaking and overexposure areas - zebras).

Magic Lantern Removal
If Magic Lantern is no longer needed, you can remove it. To do this, return to the Canon menu and again find the firmware option. Click Set to start the uninstall process, and after its completion, format the SD card in the camera if you do not want to reinstall Magic Lantern again. Remember, you must save photos from the card to another medium before formatting!
